AI data centres differ from conventional facilities in one respect that changes the generator specification: the load does not arrive gradually. Training and inference clusters can move from near idle to near full draw in a very short window, and the set has to accept that step without the resulting excursion tripping the equipment it protects. Step Load Is the Requirement a Rating Cannot Express

Two sets with identical kVA ratings can behave very differently when a large block load is applied. What separates them is engine transient response, turbocharger behaviour, alternator sizing relative to the step and controller tuning, described together by the performance class under ISO 8528-5, which MPMC lists among its applicable standards alongside GB/T 2820.5-2009 and ISO 3046.

For an AI facility the practical requirement is therefore to state the largest expected block load as a percentage of set rating, define the permitted frequency and voltage deviation and recovery time, and require the class to be demonstrated by test. A rating alone will not procure this.

MPMC lists factory testing at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 110% load steps before shipment within a CNAS-accredited testing centre. For a data centre award the useful step is to ask whether block load testing at the project's specified step size can be added to that protocol and witnessed.

Alternator Sizing Carries the Step

On step-load duty the alternator is frequently the limiting component, because accepting a large block requires reactive capability and thermal margin beyond what steady-state rating implies. MPMC lists Stamford and Leroy-Somer alternators across the range, with configurations such as the Leroy-Somer LSA 53.2 XL13 used on its documented data centre projects.

Where the block is large relative to set rating, an oversized alternator on the same engine is a legitimate solution and should be raised as a question in the technical clarification round rather than discovered during commissioning.

Cooling, Noise and Siting Near Population

AI facilities are increasingly sited where power and land allow rather than in industrial isolation, which brings acoustic limits into the specification. MPMC lists containerised super-silent types between 75 and 91 dB(A) at 1 m at 75% load depending on model, and published project figures use different bases — one New Zealand commercial installation is listed at 75 dB(A) at 7 m at 100% load.

Those figures are not directly comparable, so every offer should be restated on one measurement basis before comparison. Acoustic treatment also restricts airflow, and MPMC lists a maximum ambient of 50°C with copper high-temperature radiator options, so on a warm site with a strict limit both constraints apply at once and the derated output should be requested under the actual enclosure.

Multiple Units and the Control Layer

MPMC's published recommendation for data centre backup is 1 to 4 containerised units of 1,000 to 3,000 kVA, controlled by DSE 4520 MKII in automatic mains failure mode or DEIF AGC 150 for parallel synchronisation, with ABB or Schneider motorised circuit breakers supporting N+X redundancy and master-standby rotation.

Rotation matters in standby service because an unrun machine is an unproven one. The controller family, breaker type and synchronising scheme decide whether the intended redundancy is achievable, and they are difficult to change after delivery, so they belong in the specification rather than in commissioning.

Documented Gulf Data Centre Installations

MPMC lists a 3 MW UAE data centre installation using MTU 20V4000 G63LF engines with Leroy-Somer LSA 53.2 XL13 alternators at 50 Hz and 6 kV, with RTD monitoring, a multi-radiator arrangement and space and anti-condensation heaters, and a further 12 MW UAE data centre project on the same platform. A 36 MW US data centre backup project is also listed.

These entries establish delivery at data centre scale in a high-ambient market. They do not establish a transient performance class for a different configuration, which remains something to specify and verify for the units actually purchased.

Fuel Autonomy Against an Uncertain Load

AI facilities are harder to size for fuel than conventional halls because utilisation varies with workload rather than with a predictable diurnal pattern. Autonomy calculated from full rating overstates the tank required; autonomy calculated from average draw may understate it during a training run.

The defensible approach is to state the assumed load for the autonomy period explicitly and record it, then confirm consumption at that load rather than at rating. MPMC lists diesel to ASTM D975 Grade 2D as standard with HVO to EN 15940 supported on selected models, which is worth confirming where the facility has adopted a lower-carbon fuel policy that also affects storage and service arrangements.
