Fold, Rotate, Aim: AEC's Dual-Joint COB Work Light Platform for Global Distributors

A technician leans into an engine bay, both hands buried in a wiring loom. There is no third hand for a torch, no flat surface for a floodlight, and no time to keep repositioning anything. That is the exact moment a work light either earns its place in the toolbox or gets in the way. It is also the moment AEC Lighting Solutions designs for.

The product in the images is a slim folding COB work light built around a dual-axis joint system. The bar folds flat against the handle for storage, then swings up, rotates, and settles into the angle the job actually needs. This is not a novelty form factor. It is a portable lighting platform that AEC has engineered, validated, tooled and prepared for private label and ODM partners across more than 70 markets.

A Slim Bar on a Real Joint System

Most folding work lights solve the geometry problem with a single hinge. The result is a light that points where the housing allows rather than where the technician needs it. This AEC platform uses two separate pivot points: a large rotation hub where the bar meets the body, and a secondary folding joint above it. Between them, the light bar travels through a wide arc and can be parked at angles that a single-hinge design simply cannot reach.

The swing diagram in the image set shows that arc plainly — multiple bar positions radiating from one rotation hub, with the light landing at eight or more distinct angles across the span. In practice, that means the bar can be aimed straight down into a transmission tunnel, laid nearly flat along a floor pan, or turned sideways to graze a wheel arch. Position is set by the joint, not by a magnet or a clamp, so the light holds where it is put.

Design Details That Show Up in Daily Use

A slim linear COB array behind a diffuser. The light bar is narrow and flat, with the LED array running its full length behind a translucent cover. The output reads as an even wash rather than a hotspot — the shape a mechanic wants when inspecting a casting or tracing a harness.

A single front-mounted push button. One switch on the face of the handle, sized for a gloved thumb. No multi-button menu, no hidden modes to cycle through under a vehicle.

A charging port at the base. A recessed connector sits on the bottom of the handle, protected by the housing profile so the cord does not take the load when the light is set down.

An integrated hanging hook. The base carries a folding hook, so the light can be hung from a bonnet latch, a strut brace or a shelf rail when hands-free work matters more than floor placement.

A two-tone housing built for grip and abrasion. A matte black chassis carries a moulded green panel down the handle, giving a defined grip zone and a surface that survives contact with concrete, steel and solvent. Model markings on the bar identify the two variants shown: ASL20R and ASL50R.

Where This Light Earns Its Keep

The primary application is written into the photography: automotive service. The technician holds the bar against the inner wing while working a loom and a connector block in the lower engine bay — a reach-in task where light has to come from a specific direction and stay there. The same requirement repeats across the wider category: mechanics and workshop bays, industrial maintenance and MRO rounds, roadside assistance, emergency and public safety kits, and the tool catalogues that serve all of them.

For distributors, this is the practical value of a folding platform. One SKU family covers inspection, repair, installation and emergency use, which keeps shelf space productive and simplifies the range a buyer has to justify.

Behind the Platform: An Integrated Lighting House

AEC Lighting Solutions was founded in Shanghai in 2000 as an integrated R&D, design, manufacturing, testing and global business operation company. The company's foundation is supply-chain certainty — the ability to deliver complex portable lighting products with consistency, reliability and international compliance.

Eight capability disciplines sit under one roof and feed directly into a product like this one: optical engineering with simulation and goniophotometer verification; electronics and firmware covering constant-current drivers, BLE and Wi-Fi, battery fuel gauges and app integration; mechanical and industrial design covering ingress and impact requirements, drop and vibration testing and surface finishing; custom lithium-ion and LiFePO4 battery packs with BMS firmware and UN38.3 documentation; SMT plus assembly with AOI inspection and full lot traceability; an in-house photometric lab with EMC pre-scan, salt-spray, thermal shock and drop testing; certification and compliance engineering; and global commercialisation covering export documentation, warranty and service networks, marketplace listing and brand-ready packaging.

The track record behind that structure: founded 2000, 70+ markets served, 12M+ users, 420+ patents, 50+ R&D engineers and 30+ design awards, including an iF Design Award in 2020 and a Red Dot win in 2025. In 2015 AEC entered a joint venture with a European centennial brand; in 2018 the testing lab was formalised through partnerships with CSA, TÜV and Intertek.

From Concept to Container: A Gated Process

Customisation only works when the process is disciplined. AEC runs an eight-step development path — project discovery, product fit review, product definition, design and engineering, prototype and validation, tooling and certification, pilot production, mass production — with three formal gates controlling the handoffs.

Gate 1, Concept Validation, scores the opportunity, checks BOM feasibility, verifies optical and battery targets and runs an IP scan. Gate 2, Engineering Lock, signs off DFM, kicks off pilot tooling and locks the certification path. Gate 3, Launch Readiness, confirms the pilot lot is validated, certifications are issued and packaging and logistics are ready. Nothing moves forward on optimism; each gate has an owner and a record.

Compliance That Travels With the Product

Portable lighting lives or dies at customs and at the retailer's audit. AEC operates under ISO 9001 and EN/IEC 80079-34 quality systems, with product compliance covering CE, UKCA, FCC, RoHS and UL/CSA/MET, and explosion-proof systems certified to IECEx, ATEX, CNEx and PA where the application requires it. Testing partners include TÜV SÜD, Intertek and CSA. For a distributor adding a folding work light to a catalogue, that means the paperwork is designed in from Gate 2 rather than discovered at the port.

Six Ways to Put Your Brand on This Platform

Private label on AEC-designed products. ODM customisation built on AEC platforms like this one. Product line development from concept through mass production. OEM manufacturing to partner specifications. JDM and joint development with shared IP. Strategic portfolio partnership for long-term range building. Whichever route a buyer takes, the same engineering, validation and traceability sit underneath.

Why Distributors Are Re-Pricing This Category

The work light shelf has a familiarity problem. Products look alike, price competition erodes margin, and inconsistent quality turns into returns and warranty claims. Meanwhile the ideas that could differentiate a range rarely survive the journey from concept to production, and certification risk stays unclear until late.

The answer is not a cheaper unit. It is a platform with visible engineering — a joint system a buyer can demonstrate in a catalogue photo, a housing that survives a workshop floor, and a supply chain that can renew the range instead of stranding it. That is the gap AEC built this light to close.
